Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Senior BESS Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of battery energy storage systems on nationwide projects. This fully remote role requires strong technical leadership across electrical, civil, and SCADA domains and collaboration with internal teams, vendors, and clients.

Ideal candidates will have 5+ years in BESS/power systems, deep knowledge of NEC/IEEE codes, and experience with grid interconnection.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; Master's preferred.
• 5+ years in electrical engineering focusing on BESS, renewables, or power systems.
• Expertise in design, integration, and optimization of battery energy storage systems; including lithium-ion batteries, inverters, BMS, and grid interconnection equipment.
• Expert knowledge of BESS control strategies, algorithms, and optimization software.
• Proficiency in power system analysis (PSS/E, PSCAD) and simulation tools.
• Technical subject matter expert of applicable codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, IBC, ASCE, NESC, NFPA, utility standards).
• Extensive experience with grid operations and regulatory requirements (FERC Order 841, IEEE 1547).
• Strong understanding of fire protection requirements (UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA855).
• Thorough knowledge of communication protocols used in SCADA and Energy Management Systems (IEC 61850).
• Project management experience including budgeting, scheduling, and risk managment.
• Knowledge of EPC engineering workflows, including design deliverables, submittals, document control, and coordination with engineering partners
• Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and resources.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, adapt to dynamic project requirements, and deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Serve as SME for BESS engineering scopes and provide technical direction to project teams.
• Lead and manage the design and engineering of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to meet contracts and regulatory requirements.
• Review feasibility studies, site assessments, and system sizing analyses to recommend optimal BESS configurations.
• Serve as a senior technical contributor across electrical, civil, structural, SCADA, and HV scopes on projects.
• Manage Engineers of Record and third-party engineering partners for scope clarity and timely delivery.
• Coordinate with fire protection engineers and local fire departments/AHJs.
• Develop and review technical specifications, drawings, and documentation for BESS components to support procurement.
• Provide technical oversight during procurement including vendor recommendations and drawing reviews.
• Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and contractors to design, procure, install, and commission BESS systems.
• Oversee system modeling, simulation, and analysis to optimize performance, efficiency, and reliability.
• Provide engineering support during construction including field issue resolution and design clarifications.
• Provide engineering support for testing, validation, commissioning, energization, and initial synchronization.
• Mentor junior engineers and project teams, promoting innovation and engineering excellence.
• Stay current with industry trends, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Support business development through proposals, presentations, and technical consultations.
• Represent SOLV Engineering in customer and client meetings.
• Participate in regular team meetings/calls.
• Travel as required to support project execution.
• Complete other responsibilities as assigned.
