Affirm is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design and build backend systems powering our growth engine. You will drive scalable, secure services and mentor others in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer focused on backend systems.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and SOA.
• Proven track record delivering complex backend systems in production.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; experience with asynchronous docs and specs.
• Collaborates across Product, Data Science, Analytics, and Design.
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin; experience with both is a plus.
• Experience with AWS or other major cloud providers.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience with experimentation platforms (A/B testing).
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and tools like Kafka, Kinesis.
• Exposure to large-scale personalization, recommendation, or messaging systems.

Responsibilities

• Drive planning and prioritization of projects using data-driven decisions.
• Design and build scalable backend systems, APIs, and data models.
• Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, and Analysts to define strategies for acquisition and engagement.
• Establish and uphold engineering best practices for secure, observable, and performant services.
• Mentor and support junior engineers to foster learning and technical excellence.
• Create and monitor metrics and support on-call efforts.
