Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) seeks a Data Platform Engineer to lead the healthcare data platform modernization from MSSQL/XML toward a scalable AWS-based architecture. You will enable SQL-based reporting for business users and design migrations with cost and performance in mind.

You will work with back-end engineers to ensure clean data flows from EDI processing into the new data layer, build data catalogs, and apply IaC for repeatable infrastructure.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Experience architecting cloud data platform migrations in enterprise environments.
• Ability to design relational query layers over XML/JSON data.
• Proven reporting/analytics delivery for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and data modeling.
• Familiarity with CI/CD and IaC (CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform).
• Excellent communication of architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead modernization of the healthcare data platform.
• Shift MSSQL XML object store to scalable cloud-native AWS architecture.
• Evaluate AWS data strategy and storage options (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Build reporting layer for SQL queries against healthcare data using familiar tooling.
• Architect migration paths for XML data into AWS platform with optimal formats.
• Maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Coordinate with .NET engineers to ensure data flows from EDI pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS-native tooling and IaC practices.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries for both technical and non-technical audiences.
