Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to modernize a healthcare data platform. Remote role with a focus on AWS-native data architecture, SQL reporting, and data migration from MSSQL XML to scalable cloud storage and querying.

You will work with stakeholders to define data models, build reporting layers, and collaborate with .NET engineers to ensure seamless data flows into the new data layer.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Experience architecting cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Proven ability to evaluate AWS data services to meet reporting requirements.
• Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS experience across data services (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch).
• Strong SQL skills to design relational layers over XML/JSON.
• Familiarity with XML-heavy data stores and data transformation at scale.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs across AWS services for cost/performance.

Responsibilities

• Lead next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve from MSSQL XML object store to cloud-native AWS data architecture enabling SQL reports.
• Evaluate and decide AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Design and build reporting/query layer for business users to run SQL queries.
• Architect migration path for XML object store data into AWS, define formats and partitioning.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into data models.
• Coordinate with back-end .NET engineers to ensure data flow from EDI pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS tooling and IaC with CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries clearly.
