Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to modernize a healthcare data platform. The role is fully remote with a focus on migrating an MSSQL XML object store to a scalable AWS-based architecture, enabling SQL-based reporting for business users and analysts.

You will define data strategies, select AWS services (S3, Athena, Glue, Redshift, OpenSearch, etc.), and collaborate with stakeholders to design durable data models while maintaining cost efficiency and performance.

Qualifications

• 8+ years' experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting cloud data platform migrations in enterprise/healthcare.
• Track record selecting AWS data services for reporting and queries.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics for non-technical users.
• Deep hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL for relational layers over XML/JSON data.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and transformations at scale.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs across AWS data services for cost/performance.
• Familiarity with AWS analytics tools like QuickSight/BI tooling.
• Proficiency with Git and GitHub workflows; CI/CD with AWS tooling.
• IaC experience with AWS CDK, CloudFormation or Terraform.
• Ability to communicate architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience translating business reporting requirements into data models.
• Comfort driving architecture decisions with limited direction.
• Experience with Agile methodologies and JIRA.
• Strong documentation habits for architecture diagrams and data dictionaries.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve from MSSQL XML object store to cloud-native AWS architecture for fast SQL reports.
• Evaluate and decide the right AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Choose optimal AWS-native storage/query options (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design and build a reporting layer for SQL queries by business users.
• Architect migration path for XML object store data into the AWS platform.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services (partitioning, formats).
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Work with .NET engineers to ensure data flows from EDI to the new data layer.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS tooling.
• Apply IaC practices using CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries clearly.
