Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a talented Data Platform Engineer to lead the modernization of a healthcare data platform. This remote, full-time role focuses on evolving from MSSQL XML to a scalable AWS architecture, enabling rapid, SQL-based reporting for business users.

You will design data models, migration paths, and metadata management, while collaborating with stakeholders and a .NET team to ensure seamless data flow from EDI pipelines to the new data layer.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting cloud data platforms and migrations.
• Track record evaluating AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch).
• Strong SQL skills and ability to model relational queries over XML/JSON.
• Familiarity with XML-heavy data stores and healthcare data considerations.
• Experience with CI/CD and IaC tooling; ability to explain trade-offs to stakeholders.
• Excellent documentation and communication skills; agile / Jira experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead healthcare data platform modernization initiatives.
• Move from MSSQL XML object store to scalable AWS architecture.
• Define AWS data strategy and storage/query patterns.
• Design reporting layers for SQL-based queries by business users.
• Architect migration path of XML data into the AWS platform.
• Build AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Work with .NET engineers to connect EDI pipelines to the new data layer.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS-native tools and IaC practices.
• Document architecture decisions and data flows clearly.
