Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead the next phase of their healthcare data platform on AWS. This role focuses on migrating an MSSQL/XML data store to a scalable cloud-native architecture using S3, Athena, Redshift, and OpenSearch, enabling fast SQL reporting for stakeholders.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience migrating cloud data platforms in production environments.
• Track record selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch).
• Strong SQL for relational queries on XML/JSON data.
• Experience with XML data stores and XML transformation at scale.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs and make architecture recommendations.
• Familiarity with BI tools (Athena/QuickSight/Redshift) or equivalent.
• Proficient Git and GitHub; CI/CD with AWS tools; IaC with CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
• Strong communication of architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of the healthcare data platform modernization.
• Implement AWS-native data architecture for scalable reporting.
• Evaluate and decide the right AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Design migration path for XML object store data from MSSQL into AWS.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Work with C#/.Net engineers to ensure smooth data flow from EDI pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS tooling and IaC practices.
• Document architecture decisions and data flows clearly.
