Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) II to lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization. The role focuses on migrating from MSSQL XML to a scalable AWS data architecture, enabling SQL-based reporting for business users.

You will evaluate AWS data strategies, design storage and query architectures, and collaborate with a .NET team to ensure clean data flows from EDI pipelines.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical users
• Deep hands-on AWS data services including S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch
• Strong SQL skills for relational queries over XML/JSON
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and XML transformations at scale
• Familiarity with CI/CD tooling across AWS (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy) and IaC
• Ability to translate business requirements into data models and query patterns

Responsibilities

• Lead the healthcare data platform modernization initiative
• Design and implement AWS-native data architecture for scalable reporting
• Move XML object stores from MSSQL into AWS with optimized storage formats
• Build data catalog, schemas, and metadata accessibility for business users
• Collaborate with .NET engineers to ensure seamless data flow and integration
• Define and optimize data partitioning, compression, and file formats for cost/performance
• Develop CI/CD pipelines and IaC using CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries clearly
• Engage with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into durable data models
• Support migration planning and architecture trade-off analyses
