Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) to lead the modernization of a healthcare data platform. This remote, full-time role focuses on evolving from MSSQL/xml stores to AWS-native data architectures to enable fast, SQL-based reporting for business users.

The candidate will design scalable data solutions, optimize cost and performance across AWS services, and partner with stakeholders and a .NET engineering team to ensure seamless data flows and CI/CD

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting cloud data platform migrations in enterprise or healthcare environments.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Deep hands-on AWS experience across data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL skills for relational queries over XML/JSON.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores, parsing, querying, and transforming at scale.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices and AWS-native tooling.
• Familiarity with BI tools such as QuickSight.
• Proficiency with Git and collaboration workflows.
• Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban) and JIRA.
• IaC experience with AWS CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.

Responsibilities

• Lead modernization of the healthcare data platform.
• Architect AWS data architecture for scalable reporting and queries.
• Define data strategies and storage options (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design and build SQL-based reporting layers for business users.
• Migrate XML object store data from MSSQL into AWS platform with optimal formats.
• Maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Coordinate with .NET developers for data flow from EDI pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD for data infrastructure using AWS-native tools.
• Apply IaC using CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries clearly.
