Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer focused on AWS Data Engineering to modernize healthcare data platforms. You will lead migration from MSSQL XML stores to cloud-native AWS architectures, enabling performant SQL-based reports for business users.

You will evaluate AWS data services, design storage and query layers, and implement CI/CD and IaC to deliver scalable data pipelines. Remote, U.S.-based position with public trust eligibility.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Experience migrating cloud data platforms in production environments.
• Proven ability to select AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch.
• Strong SQL for relational layers over XML/JSON data.
• Experience parsing and transforming XML at scale.
• Ability to assess trade-offs between AWS data services by cost and performance.
• Familiarity with AWS analytics tools (Athena, QuickSight, Redshift) or BI tooling.
• Proficient with Git, GitHub, and CI/CD tooling; IaC with CDK/CloudFormation/TF.
• Excellent communication to convey architectural trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead the healthcare data platform modernization initiative.
• Evolve MSSQL XML object store to scalable AWS data architecture for reporting.
• Design and implement AWS data strategies and storage architectures (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Create reporting layers enabling SQL-based queries via familiar tooling.
• Architect XML data migration path from MSSQL to the target AWS platform.
• Build and maintain data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services through tuning.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into data models.
• Coordinate data flows from EDI pipelines into the new data layer with back-end C#/.Net.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS-native tooling and IaC practices.
