Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) seeks a Senior Systems Engineer with AWS Data Engineer expertise to lead the healthcare data platform modernization, delivering a scalable cloud-native architecture that supports SQL-based reporting on healthcare data.

The role requires evaluating AWS data services, designing migration paths from MSSQL XML stores, and building CI/CD pipelines in collaboration with a C#/.NET backend team.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet reporting and query requirements.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Deep hands-on AWS experience across data services (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch).
• Strong SQL skills and ability to design relational query layers over semi-structured data (XML, JSON).
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores—parsing, querying, and transforming XML at scale.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices and AWS-native tooling (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy).
• IaC experience (CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform).
• Excellent communication of architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience translating business reporting requirements into data models.
• Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and JIRA.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Architect a cloud-native AWS data architecture enabling SQL-based reporting on healthcare data.
• Evaluate and decide AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Design optimal AWS-native storage and query architecture (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Build reporting/query layer for business users using familiar tools.
• Plan migration from MSSQL XML object store to AWS platform with defined formats and partitioning.
• Maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Optimize query performance and costs across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into durable data models.
• Coordinate data flows from EDI pipelines to the new data layer with .NET services.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infra using AWS tooling.
• Apply IaC using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries clearly.
