Job summary

Valar Atomics is seeking a Senior Automation and Controls Engineer to design, configure, test, and commission control software for nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities in Utah. The role covers PLC/DCS programming, SCADA/HMI development, ISA-88 batch control, alarm management, safety logic, historian configuration, and enterprise data integration.

You will collaborate with I&C hardware engineers and process engineers on capital projects and plant operations, applying ISA standards and IEC 61511

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, or Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
• 3 to 7 years of controls software, PLC programming, or SCADA development experience in process industries.
• Hands-on PLC programming experience with major platforms using IEC 61131-3 languages.
• Hands-on experience developing or maintaining SCADA applications on major platforms.
• Experience designing HMI displays to ISA-101 or HPHMI principles.
• Experience developing batch control sequences in ISA-88.
• Experience configuring alarm management systems with ISA-18.2.
• Experience configuring plant historian systems and building operational data dashboards.
• Familiarity with ISA-95 enterprise-control integration concepts.
• Working knowledge of OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or Modbus protocols.
• Ability to read P&IDs, loop diagrams, and I/O lists; knowledge of software version control and change control.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain PLC and DCS application programs using multiple platforms.
• Develop and configure SCADA applications and maintain tag databases and automation architecture.
• Design and implement HMI displays and supervisory SCADA interfaces per ISA-101/HPHMI.
• Develop ISA-88 batch control, unit procedures, and material tracking modules.
• Configure alarm systems per ISA-18.2 and manage KPI reporting.
• Program safety logic on SIS platforms per IEC 61511.
• Configure historian systems and build data dashboards and reports.
• Enable ISA-95 enterprise-control integration and REST API interfaces.
• Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols.
• Write SQL queries and Python scripts for data processing and test automation.
