Job summary

Valar Atomics is seeking a Controls Software Engineer to design, configure, test, and commission control software for nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities in Utah. You will handle PLC/DCS programming, SCADA/HMI development, ISA-88 batch control, alarm management, safety logic per IEC 61511, historian setup, and enterprise integration.

The role includes implementing ISA-95 interfaces, data dashboards, REST APIs, OPC-UA, and cross-functional collaboration with I&C hardware and process engineers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, or Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
• 3–7 years of controls software, PLC programming, or SCADA development experience in process industries.
• Hands-on PLC programming experience with major platforms using IEC 61131-3 languages.
• Hands-on experience developing or maintaining SCADA applications on major platforms.
• Experience designing HMI displays to ISA-101 or HPHMI principles.
• Experience developing batch control sequences in ISA-88.
• Experience configuring alarm management systems with ISA-18.2.
• Experience configuring plant historian systems and building dashboards.
• Familiarity with ISA-95 enterprise-control integration concepts.
• Knowledge of OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or Modbus protocols.
• Ability to read P&IDs, loop diagrams, and I/O lists.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain PLC and DCS programs on major platforms using IEC 61131-3 languages.
• Develop and configure SCADA applications and databases, scripting, and redundancy architectures.
• Design HMI displays for local panels and supervisory levels following ISA-101/HPHMI.
• Create ISA-88 batch control software and supervise batch execution monitoring.
• Configure alarm management systems per ISA-18.2 and implement safety logic per IEC 61511.
• Develop interfaces for ISA-95 enterprise-control integration (MES/ERP/LIMS) via REST APIs.
• Configure and troubleshoot industrial protocols (OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus).
• Write SQL queries and Python scripts for data processing and test automation.
• Apply version control, change control, and disaster recovery for software.
• Coordinate with I&C hardware on I/O naming, tagging, and commissioning.
• Provide technical direction to contractors and ensure nuclear quality compliance.
