Job summary

AppFolio is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Permissions team to build the authorization platform that governs access across all products. You will create fast, clear, and dependable permission checks at scale and partner with multiple teams to keep data safe and workflows trustworthy.

You will design systems, mentor engineers, and lead the migration of legacy logic to modern authorization, raising the technical bar through reviews and proposals while ensuring end-to-end quality with

Qualifications

7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
Experience with authorization, authentication, or other security-sensitive systems is a plus.
Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to learn and utilize AI for building.
Depth in Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or ability to become effective quickly.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate the authorization platform (roles, policies, access checks).
Improve speed and reliability of permission checks as usage grows; set performance/availability goals.
Build interfaces, libraries, and tooling for teams to add access control to features.
Lead migration of older permissions logic to modern authorization platform.
Contribute to design reviews, code reviews, and written proposals to guide decisions.
Mentor engineers and partner with product, security, and other teams on access-control needs.
Own end-to-end quality with automated testing, controlled rollouts, and observability.
