Job summary

AppFolio Senior Software Engineer - Platform Permissions will join a team that designs and operates the authorization platform powering roles, policies, and access checks across the product suite.

You will drive performance improvements for permission checks, build interfaces and tooling for teams to add access control, migrate legacy logic, and mentor engineers while delivering safe, observable changes in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to use AI for development.
• Depth in Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or the ability to learn quickly.
• Track record designing and owning non-trivial Platform systems end-to-end.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform—the roles, policies, and access checks that other teams rely on.
• Improve the speed and reliability of permission checks as usage grows and set performance/availability goals.
• Build interfaces, libraries, and tooling for teams to add access control to their features.
• Lead the migration of legacy permissions logic to the modern authorization platform.
• Provide thoughtful design reviews and clear written proposals to guide team decisions.
• Mentor engineers and partner with product, security, and engineering teams on access-control needs.
