Job summary

AppFolio is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Permissions team to design and operate the authorization platform that governs access across all AppFolio products. You will build fast, clear, and dependable permission checks at scale, partnering with multiple teams to make secure access the default path.

You will lead migration of legacy permissions logic, drive high-quality designs, and mentor engineers while collaborating with product and security teams to meet ambiguous access-control

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to learn and utilize AI for building.
• Depth in Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or the ability to become proficient quickly.
• Track record of designing and owning non-trivial platform systems end-to-end.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform—roles, policies, and access checks.
• Improve speed and reliability of permission checks as usage grows.
• Build interfaces and tooling to easily add access control to features.
• Migrate older permissions logic to the modern authorization platform.
• Contribute to design reviews, code reviews, and written proposals to guide decisions.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product and security teams on access-control needs.
• Own quality end-to-end including automated testing and controlled rollouts.
