AppFolio is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Permissions team to design, build, and operate the authorization platform that defines who can do what across AppFolio products. You will improve permission checks, design interfaces, and migrate legacy logic to the modern system, partnering with security and product teams to keep data safe and workflows trustworthy.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Fluency with AI coding agents and willingness to learn and utilize AI for building.
• Depth in Ruby on Rails, Go, or React with TypeScript, or the ability to learn quickly.
• Track record designing and owning non-trivial platform systems end-to-end.
• Strong written and verbal communication, able to explain technical trade-offs clearly.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate the authorization platform the team relies on.
• Improve speed and reliability of permission checks as usage grows.
• Build interfaces and tooling for teams to add access control safely.
• Lead migration of legacy permissions logic to the new platform.
• Participate in design reviews and provide clear documentation proposals.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product, security, and other teams.
