Job summary

ERM, a leading sustainability consultancy, seeks a Principal Consultant, Archaeologist to lead complex cultural resources projects from a US office. You will mentor teams, maintain client relationships, and drive regulatory compliance across multi-state efforts in energy and infrastructure sectors.

The role emphasizes technical excellence, project leadership, and growth of ERM’s cultural resources services nationwide, with opportunities for travel and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 6–8 years of related paid experience.
  • Secretary of the Interior-qualified archaeologist (RPA) or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated field experience and principal-level oversight on projects.
  • Experience as primary author or reviewer on agency-reviewed technical reports.
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agency personnel as a consultant.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and travel to field sites.
  • Experience with mapping equipment and field technologies (total station, GPS, ArcGIS FieldMaps, Survey123).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a permitted BLM Principal Investigator.
  • Obtain BLM Cultural Resources Use Permits and other permits.
  • Provide QA/QC review of deliverables by other archaeologists.
  • Oversee desktop studies and field investigations ( reconnaissance, survey, testing, excavations, monitoring).
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor archaeologists across experience levels.
  • Coordinate with unit leads, directors, area managers, and partners for performance and delivery.
  • Sign as Principal Investigator or Task Manager for studies on major capital projects.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within scope and budget.
  • Support multi-state projects and expand ERM’s cultural resources market share.
  • Partner with leadership to grow client relationships and drive revenue.
  • Identify opportunities for cross-selling services to clients.
  • Collaborate with environmental planners, GIS, engineers, and other experts.
  • Represent ERM in client meetings and with partners and regulators.
  • Manage subcontractor needs and performance as required.
