Job summary

ERM is seeking a Principal Consultant, Archaeologist to lead cultural resources projects across the United States from an ERM US office. This role combines technical excellence, project leadership, and business development, mentoring staff and guiding client service.

The successful candidate will oversee field and reporting work, manage multidisciplinary teams, and expand ERM’s presence in energy and infrastructure sectors while ensuring safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 6–8 years of related paid experience.
  • Secretary of the Interior-qualified archaeologist listed as a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA), meeting SHPO requirements.
  • Demonstrated field experience and principal-level oversight for projects (inventory, survey, testing, data recovery).
  • Experience as primary author or reviewer on agency-reviewed technical reports (Class I/III, NEPA sections, Cultural Resources Treatment Plans, etc.).
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agency personnel as a consultant.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Occasional travel to field sites.
  • Experience with mapping equipment and field tech (Total Station, GPS, ArcGIS FieldMaps, Survey123).
  • Driver's License Required for travel.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as permitted BLM Principal Investigator.
  • Obtain BLM permits and other necessary federal and state permits.
  • Provide QA/QC on deliverables produced by archaeologists.
  • Oversee desktop studies and field investigations (reconnaissance, pedestrian surveys, testing, excavations, monitoring).
  • Lead, supervise, and manage archaeologists across experience levels (hiring, mentoring, training).
  • Coordinate with Cultural Resources leaders to support performance and delivery.
  • Serve as signing Principal Investigator and/or Task Manager for studies on major capital projects.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, within scope, budget, schedule, and quality.
  • Support multi-state infrastructure projects and site-specific assignments.
  • Expand ERM’s culture resources market share through technical excellence and business development.
  • Partner with Managing Partners to deepen client relationships and drive revenue.
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities to existing clients.
  • Collaborate with environmental planners, GIS, engineers, and other experts.
  • Represent ERM in client meetings and with stakeholders.
  • Manage subcontractor needs and performance.
