Job summary

Hawaiʻi State Department of Education is seeking a School Cook II to manage meal preparation for students in a school setting. The position requires knowledge of quantity cooking, adherence to standardized recipes, and the ability to plan production to meet meal service times.

Responsibilities include preparing and cooking foods, portioning meals, supervising helpers, and maintaining sanitary kitchen operations.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • General Experience: experience in preparing and cooking food in a kitchen or similar setting.
  • Specialized Experience: quantity cooking in large-scale operations.
  • Non-Qualifying Experience: serving food, cleaning, or other non-quantity cooking roles.
  • Substitution of Training for Experience: associate degree in Food Service or equivalent substitutions acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates with other food service staff to meet meal service times.
  • Review production records and plan cooking times and quantities.
  • Weighs and measures ingredients according to recipes and production needs.
  • Prepares, cooks and heats a variety of foods and assembles meals.
  • Sets up serving counters, serves meals and replenishes items as needed.
  • Portions and packs items for satellite meals and maintains clean work areas.
  • Receives provisions, documents temperatures, stores goods and assists with monthly inventory.
  • Directs cafeteria helpers and trains new staff; may supervise satellite operations.
  • Attends staff meetings and completes required USDA training hours.
