Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation in Lynchburg is launching the EDGE – Construction Engineering program to develop entry-level engineers. The program runs 15–24 months with rotations across construction, environmental, maintenance, materials, planning, and roadways, to build broad technical and leadership skills.

After completion, graduates are placed in classified positions aligned with agency need and their career goals.

Qualifications

Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and obtain the EIT designation within 12 months.
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, or related ABET-program.
Knowledge of highway construction principles.
Must be at least 18 years old by start of employment.
Skill in basic computer operations.

Responsibilities

Construction: field inspections and project documentation.
Environmental: understand environmental functions and responsibilities.
Maintenance: maintenance systems and activities.
Materials: knowledge of materials, QA, pavement, geotechnical engineering.
Planning: transportation planning responsibilities.
Residency Operations: budgeting, preliminary engineering, land development, construction, maintenance.
Right of Way: role and responsibilities.
Roadway Design: develop roadway designs for complex projects.
Structure and Bridge: preliminary design, bridge safety inspection, maintenance.
Traffic Engineering and Operations: basic knowledge of traffic engineering and operations.
