Job summary

State of South Carolina’s Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to operate small equipment and support road upkeep across districts. The role includes flagging, traffic control, and manual labor for resurfacing and drainage projects.

Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and will be required to obtain a Class A CDL within six months. The job may involve extended shifts and emergency response during inclement weather.

Qualifications

• No minimum training or experience is required for this classification.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Must obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate small equipment (dump truck, brush chipper, concrete mixer, roller, snow plow, spreader, powered tools, and hand tools) for maintenance of roads and facilities.
• Assist with placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
• Serve as a flagger to direct and control traffic in work zones.
• Perform construction, repair, and preservation of asphalt and concrete pavements with proper techniques.
• Assist with installation/repair of catch basins, drainage structures, and drainage pipes.
• Assist with traffic signs, pavement markings, and safety devices.
• Collect litter and debris; respond to emergencies and inclement weather, possibly 12-hour shifts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
