Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform road and bridge maintenance tasks across the state highway system. You will operate a range of equipment, assist with traffic control, and serve as a flagger in work zones, with duties including vegetation management and pothole repair.

This position requires lifting up to 50 lbs, potential extended hours, and the attainment of a Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Qualifications

No minimum training or experience required.
Special requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.

Responsibilities

Operate small equipment such as brine sprayer, brush chipper, forklift, and other listed machinery.
Assist with placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones.
Serve as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
Perform manual labor in road and bridge maintenance tasks, including driveways, shoulders, ditches, and drainage structures.
Operate powered tools including chain saws, weed eaters, drills, and impact wrenches for vegetation and maintenance work.
Remove litter and debris from roadways and rights-of-way; assist with on-call after-hours emergencies.
May require extended or 12-hour shifts and lifting heavy objects.
