Unit Information
  • Beds: 4
  • Average daily census: 4
  • Minimum experience required: 1 year in medical-surgical with telemetry or progressive care experience
  • First-time travelers accepted
Patient Types and Common Diagnoses
  • General medical patients requiring continuous monitoring of cardiac, respiratory, hemodynamic, and neurologic status, including NSTEMI or post-STEMI, cardiac interventional procedures, electrophysiology procedures, heart failure, and post-stroke care
  • General, vascular, or immediate thoracic surgical patients needing continuous cardiac, respiratory, or hemodynamic support, including pharmacological titration of cardiac anti-arrhythmic drips (e.g., amiodarone, cardizem, cardene, dobutamine, tridil)
  • Patients with respiratory failure requiring medium or high flow oxygen devices or non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV)
Patient Ratios
  • RN: 1:3 or 1:4 depending on interventions
  • CNA: Yes, ratio varies
Required Licensure & Certifications
  • BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS (Resource Team requirement)
Skills Required
  • Cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac strip and rhythm interpretation
  • Management of arterial lines and titration of drips
  • Non-invasive ventilator care (BiPAP/CPAP) with Respiratory Therapist support 24/7
  • Care of vascular lines, chest tubes or drains
  • Post-procedure site care including transradial bands, femoral venous or arterial sheaths
  • Post-electrophysiology permanent pacemaker or ICD care
  • Post pulmonary artery thrombectomy (Prenumbra, Inari)

  • 36 hours during week 1 including New Team Orientation and online computer-based learning (Healthstream)
  • 12-hour department-specific orientation shift with an RN preceptor
