Job summary

SoftPath Medical is seeking an RN for MedSurg/Tele at a major teaching hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. Unit 5C handles diverse MedSurg cases with an RN-to-patient ratio of 1:5 and CNA support; travelers are welcome to join the team.

Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS; minimum 1 year Med/Surg/Tele experience; Epic EMR experience. Floating to other units and ongoing education may be involved.

Orientation includes NEO and 2 days departmental orientation; free parking is provided. Scrub color: Royal Blue.

Responsibilities

• Provide MedSurg/Tele care at 1:5 RN ratio.
• Monitor cardiac rhythms and manage drips.
• Collaborate with hospital teams in a teaching center.
• Operate Epic EMR for orders and charting.

About Facility

Teaching Hospital: Academic Medical Center

Chest Pain Center

Stroke Center

Unit Information: 5C

Beds: 10

Average daily census: 8 patients

Minimum experience required: 1 year Med/Tele experience

First-time travelers considered; travel experience preferred

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses

Variety of MedSurg cases including:

• Diabetes Mellitus (no insulin drips)
• Respiratory illnesses
• Gastrointestinal illnesses
• Neurological surgeries
• Trauma surgeries with spinal precautions

Cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery patients:

• Pre-cardiothoracic surgery (CABG)
• Cath lab patients (clean Cath) managing TR bands

Patient Ratios

RN: 1:5

CNA: 1:10

Required Licensure & Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS (Resource Team requirement)

Skills Required

• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Use of PCA pumps
• Management of all types of surgical drains and wound care
• Handling TR Bands
• Management of drips including Cardizem, Nitro, and Amiodarone (must be willing to learn)

Support within the Department

• CNA support with vital signs, blood glucose checks, hourly safety rounds, and activities of daily living
• Receptionist/HUC available
• Charge nurse available as a floater; may occasionally have a full assignment
• Phlebotomy: peripheral blood draws performed
• IV/VAT Team: Not available; nurses start their own IVs
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7; assistance available by page
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• Intensivist coverage 24/7
• Telemetry monitoring by bedside; RN responsible for reading and interpreting cardiac strips

Technology/Equipment

• Electronic Medical Record system: Epic
• IV Pump: Alaris
• Medication dispensing: Omnicell
• No monitors in patient rooms
• Unit-specific equipment includes external fixators, chest tubes, PCAs, tracheostomies, and complex wound care supplies

Floating

• Floats to Rehab, 4 Ardmore, 10 Reynolds, 9 Reynolds, 5 Ardmore, Burn-10 North, and 4A MedSurg Overflow units
