Job summary

SoftPath Medical in Macon, GA seeks a skilled Registered Nurse for the ICU to provide comprehensive care for critically ill patients. The role includes monitoring ventilated patients, managing invasive lines, and titrating vasoactive medications with a patient-centered approach.

The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of ICU experience, proficiency with EPIC, and BLS/ACLS; NIHSS is strongly preferred. Travel nurses are welcome, with a busy, team-oriented unit culture and 24/7 support services.

Qualifications

• Minimum experience: 2 years as an ICU RN.
• First-time travel nurses are welcome.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are mandatory; CCRN is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide care for ICU patients with complex conditions including respiratory, renal, and hemodynamic instability.
• Monitor and manage invasive lines, syringe pumps, and ventilated patients.
• Administer and titrate vasoactive medications; titration based on heart rate and blood pressure.
• Collaborate with physicians and respiratory therapy for bedside procedures and patient care.

Registered Nurse - Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Facility Overview

• 637 licensed beds
• Level 1 Trauma Center
• Teaching Hospital
• Chest Pain Center
• Stroke Center

Unit Details

• Number of beds: 14
• Current census: 14
• Minimum experience: 2 years as an ICU RN
• First-time travel nurses are welcome

Patient Population and Common Conditions

• Medical ICU patients
• Typical diagnoses include respiratory failure, renal failure, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeding, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hypotension, hypertension, stroke, pneumonia, cancer, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and overdoses
• Patients with chronic ventilator and tracheostomy needs
• Hemodynamically unstable patients requiring invasive monitoring or close observation

Staffing Ratios

• Registered Nurse to patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2 (occasionally 1:3)
• Certified Nursing Assistants: 1-2 per shift

Required Licenses and Certifications

• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are mandatory
• Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification is preferred but not required

Essential Skills

• Care for tracheostomies and chest tubes
• Peripheral IV insertion
• Management of insulin and heparin drips using glucommander and titration based on heart rate and blood pressure
• Handling vasoactive medications
• Monitoring and managing invasive lines such as arterial lines, central venous catheters, pulse oximetry, and intracranial pressure devices
• Assisting with or managing bedside procedures including chest tube placement, tracheostomy, and PEG tube insertion
• Operation of TABLO dialysis system
• Management of ventilated patients

Departmental Support

• CNA responsibilities include vital signs, glucose monitoring, bathing, feeding, ambulation, patient turning, hourly rounding, and patient transport (transport team available)
• Unit secretary coverage from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; house-wide call secretary from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• Charge nurse may have patient assignments
• Phlebotomy primarily performed by laboratory staff; nurses draw blood from central lines
• No dedicated IV/VAT team; PICC team available
• Resource nurses available, including discharge nurses and a float team covering all units
• Respiratory therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalists and intensivists available around the clock
• Central telemetry monitoring unit in place

Floating Policy

Floating occurs within all adult ICU units, including the Progressive Care Unit (PCU).

Orientation Process

• One day of orientation with educational modules
• Two days of departmental orientation
