Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking a Helper to assist drivers and residential customers with solid waste collection. The role involves loading materials, sorting recyclables, and maintaining vehicle cleanliness on a daily route in a residential setting.

The candidate will assist in safe truck operation, follow safety protocols, and communicate effectively with customers and team members. A GED/HS diploma and basic training are valued, with potential for growth within Field Operations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required (or desired).
• 1–3 months related experience and/or training desired, but not required.
• Valid driver’s license preferred, but not required.
• Must meet safety-sensitive criteria per company standards.

Responsibilities

• Collect solid waste/recyclables from customer premises or curbside.
• Load waste into rear or side of collection vehicle.
• Sort recyclables and deposit into proper compartments when applicable.
• Assist driver in safe operation of the vehicle and in space maneuvering.
• Operate equipment on truck to compact trash/materials.
• Audit vehicle equipment before leaving the branch (e.g., broom, shovel).
• Identify and remove prohibited waste items, notify driver of issues.
• Follow safety and equipment checks, comply with company rules on safety and vehicle operation.
• Work with supervisor to improve routing efficiencies and maintain route quality.
• Wear required PPE at all times (gloves, reflective vest, safety glasses, boots).
• Keep interior cab and exterior of vehicle clean.
• Attend safety and branch meetings.
