Job summary

SYSTEM West Virginia University Health System is seeking a skilled Medical Coder to review complex surgical cases and assign ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes from medical records.

The role supports revenue cycle operations and requires credentialing (AHIMA or AAPC) with a plan to obtain specialty certification within one year, plus at least three years of medical coding experience. Remote-friendly, full-time position with standard hours across diverse surgical services.

Qualifications

• Three (3) years of medical coding experience including one (1) year of advanced surgical coding experience.
• AHIMA or AAPC certification required; specialty certification within 1 year of hire.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent; Associates degree preferred.
• Knowledge of AMA and CMS coding guidelines, ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS.

Responsibilities

• Code and audit complex surgical procedures (e.g., Bariatric, Cardiothoracic, Orthopaedics) as part of daily workload.
• Interpret medical record documentation to assign ICD-10, CPT, and modifier codes.
• Ensure timely and accurate coding, charging and data abstraction for assigned accounts.
• Maintain current coding knowledge through in-services, seminars, and updates to coding manuals.
• Collaborate with physicians and offices to obtain necessary information for accurate coding.
• Assist Revenue Cycle in claim development and resolving problem accounts.

Education
