Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation for a fully remote role. You will own the initial substation design for utility-scale solar and BESS projects, coordinating inputs from engineering, procurement, estimating, and clients to align technical assumptions and schedule during the 10% design phase.

Responsibilities include reviewing client documents, leading the 10% design, supporting LNTP efforts, and ensuring handoffs to Preconstruction are seamless.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Strong knowledge of substation design principles and protection schemes.
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach by defining design basis, assumptions, equipment requirements, layouts, quantities, risks, and open items for the 10% design deliverable.
• Review client documents, PPAs, interconnection agreements, and related project information to identify requirements, risks, and scope.
• Serve as the primary substation design SME coordinating inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, scheduling, and other stakeholders.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design including single-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design, quantities, scope narrative, schedule, and commercial assumptions.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps or exclusions requiring clarification.
• Deliver the owner-reviewed preliminary substation design to estimating and BD per the project stage-gate.
• Participate in client meetings to review exhibits, explain assumptions, identify risks, and clarify requirements outside SOLV standards.
• Support contractual exhibit reviews and markups, and escalate material commitments or significant risk.
• Communicate design decisions and required inputs clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepare and issue proposal requests to EORs and engineering subcontractors, ensuring alignment with project scope and LNTP requirements.
• Prepare the engineering scope, schedule inputs, coordination details, assumptions, and risks for handoff to Preconstruction.
• Support handoff by transferring RFIs, comments, design risks, procurement constraints, and open items to HV engineering team.
• Review and approve preliminary design deliverables, propose cost-effective alternatives, and maintain documentation of iterations.
• Mentor junior team members and identify training needs in substation design, protection, metering, and handoff processes.
