Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation for nationwide utility-scale solar, BESS, and interconnection projects. The role is fully remote with interview-stage location discussions.

You will own early design decisions, align scope, schedule, and risks, and serve as the technical owner from kickoff through preconstruction handoff. Responsibilities include leading 10% design, coordinating inputs across engineering disciplines, and ensuring alignment with PPA/IA/utility standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is a nice-to-have, not required.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar).
• Strong understanding of substation design principles, protection schemes, and industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC).
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for assigned pursuits and projects.
• Review client documents, PPAs, interconnection agreements, and related project information to identify requirements and risks.
• Serve as the primary substation design SME for assigned projects and coordinate inputs from multiple teams.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design including single-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design, scope, and commercial assumptions.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps and contingencies.
• Deliver the owner reviewed preliminary substation design for BD and estimating.
• Communicate design decisions and risks to stakeholders.
• Prepare engineering scope and handoff materials for Preconstruction Engineering.
