Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation to own the preliminary substation design and engineering lifecycle for solar, BESS, and interconnection projects. You will serve as the technical owner from BD kickoff through Design-to-Preconstruction handoff, aligning design basis, scope, schedule, risk, and assumptions before execution begins.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
• PE licensure or equivalent is a nice-to-have.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar).
• Strong understanding of substation design principles, protection schemes, and industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC).
• Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal regulations related to electrical engineering and solar development.
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.
• In-depth knowledge of building codes, engineering principles, and industry best practices.
• Effective communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Preliminary Substation Design and Technical Ownership for 10% design deliverable.
• Review client documents and identify requirements, risks, and scope outside SOLV standards.
• Coordinate inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, and other specialties.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design including single-line diagrams and equipment sizing.
• Coordinate with estimating to align design, quantities, scope, and schedule.
• Review estimates for completeness, identify gaps, exclusions, and contingencies.
• Engage in client meetings to review exhibits and clarify requirements.
• Handoff to Preconstruction Engineering with clear RFIs and decisions.
• Maintain design documentation and track decisions and handoffs.
• Mentor junior staff and support training and development.
