Job summary

Optum, a part of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking a Senior Inpatient Facility Certified Medical Coder for a fully remote role in the United States. The position focuses on assigning ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for inpatient services, ensuring accurate DRG classification, and maintaining up‑to‑date coding knowledge.

The role requires AHIMA/AAPC credentials and 3+ years in acute care inpatient coding, with trauma center experience preferred. Training is provided, and telecommuting is supported.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of acute care inpatient medical coding experience.
• 2+ years in Level 2+ trauma centers and/or teaching hospitals with complex procedures.
• 2+ years of ICD-10-CM/PCS and DRG coding experience.
• Professional coder certification from AHIMA and/or AAPC (RHIA/RHIT/CCS/CCS-P/CPC or CPC-H).
• High School Diploma/GED.
• Ability to pass pre-employment requirements including drug screening and background check.

Responsibilities

• Identify ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for inpatient hospital services and their impact on DRG.
• Abstract additional data elements during chart reviews as needed.
• Adhere to official coding guidelines and client guidelines.
• Maintain coding quality and productivity as per Optum360 standards.
• Provide documentation feedback to providers and query physicians when appropriate.
• Stay current with coding knowledge via QM Manager and Directors.
• Participate in departmental meetings and educational events.
• Record charts coded, held, or missing.
