Job summary

Optum, a UnitedHealth Group company, is seeking an experienced Inpatient Coder to join our team. The role focuses on DRG coding for facility services, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and chart abstraction in a fast-paced hospital setting.

You will work with encoder systems, EMR platforms, and Excel, ensuring compliance with AHIMA/AAPC standards and facility guidelines. Remote work from anywhere in the U.S. is supported with occasional on-site requirements.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; AHIMA/AAPC credentialing to be maintained annually.
• 3+ years inpatient DRG coding in an acute care setting.
• 3+ years ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG coding using an encoder.
• Proficiency with Windows OS and Microsoft Excel; experience with EMR systems.

Responsibilities

• Identify assignment of ICD-10 CM/PCS, DRG, and abstraction for facility services.
• Expert knowledge in Inpatient DRG Coding.
• Abstract additional data elements during chart review as needed.
• Query physicians when appropriate.
• Maintain up-to-date coding knowledge and review materials from QM Manager and Coding Directors.
• Participate in coding department meetings and educational events.
• Adhere to official coding guidelines and client coding guidelines.
