Job summary

Syms Strategic Group, LLC seeks an experienced Senior Application/Infrastructure Support Engineer to support cloud-based systems for the Veterans Affairs department. The role is fully remote within the United States, requiring 8+ years in systems engineering and a Public Trust clearance eligibility.

The engineer will manage large-scale production environments, implement IaC and CI/CD pipelines, and collaborate across development, operations, and security teams while maintaining security

Qualifications

• Experience with AWS and/or Azure Cloud, including S3, Step Functions, Batch Jobs, and CloudWatch.
• Proven track record of managing and maintaining large-scale production systems.
• Strong proficiency in Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems.
• Experience with system administration tasks including user management, permissions, and system monitoring.
• Scripting in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation and configuration management.
• Experience with automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or SaltStack.
• Knowledge of IaC tools such as CloudFormation and cloud-native technologies.
• Experience with monitoring tools like CloudWatch, DynaTrace, Science Logic.
• Troubleshoot and optimize system performance and reliability.
• Understand network protocols, firewall configurations, and VPN setup.
• Experience with network monitoring and diagnostic tools.
• Secure production practices and audits; compliance awareness.
• Working knowledge of databases such as AWS RDS SQL Server and Oracle RDMBS/RDS.
• Database performance tuning and backup/recovery processes.
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and version control systems like Git.
• CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, AWS CodeBuild and CodeDeploy.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-level, day-to-day operational support of complex application cloud systems.
• Develop solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope.
• Follow standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data.
• Detect, isolate, document, rapidly report, and resolve outages or problems in scientific workstations.
• Accurately document problems in logging and discrepancy reporting tools.
• Work directly with the customer in day-to-day activities.
• Respond to user calls regarding hardware and software problems; escalate when required.
• Communicate status of key problem statuses to users and senior management.
• Perform maintenance/installation of computing infrastructure.
• Implement continuous improvement methodology in IT systems and procedures.
• Maintain inventory of system assets.
• Ensure compliance with VA standards and security policies.
• Provide documentation, training, and additional duties as assigned.
• Collaborate with development, operations, and security teams for seamless production operations.
