Job summary

Syms Strategic Group, LLC is seeking a Senior Application/Infrastructure Support Engineer for a 100% US-based remote role in the Veterans Affairs department. The position requires robust production-system expertise, cloud and on-prem infrastructure administration, and strong security compliance.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years in systems engineering, 3+ years of SQL monitoring, and hands-on experience with AWS/Azure, Linux/Windows, automation, IaC, CI/CD, and modern monitoring tools.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in systems engineering or a related field, with production environments.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure), especially S3, Step Functions, Batch, CloudWatch.
• Proficient in Linux/Unix and Windows OS.
• Scripting skills in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation.
• Experience with automation/config management tools: Ansible, Puppet, Chef, SaltStack.
• Knowledge of IaC (CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiar with monitoring tools like DynaTrace, Science Logic, CloudWatch.
• Security/compliance awareness incl. audits and securing production systems.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration.
• Experience with databases such as AWS RDS SQL Server and Oracle RDMBS/RDS.

Responsibilities

• Perform high-level, day-to-day operational support of complex application cloud systems.
• Develop solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope.
• Follow standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.
• Detect, isolate, document, report, and resolve system outages or problems during operations of workstations; collect diagnostic data and recover operations.
• Document problems in logging and discrepancy reporting tools.
• Work directly with the customer in day-to-day activities.
• Respond to user calls regarding hardware and software problems, escalating when required.
• Communicate status of key issues to users and senior management.
• Perform maintenance/installation of computing infrastructure.
• Implement continuous improvement through IT systems or procedures.
• Maintain inventory of system assets.
• Ensure VA standards and security policies are followed.
