Job summary

Optum is hiring a SDS/Observations Medical Coder for a full-time, 40-hour work week. This role allows telecommuting from anywhere in the U.S. and emphasizes accurate CPT/ICD-10 coding, adherence to coding guidelines, and ongoing professional development.

Qualified candidates will have 2+ years in outpatient facility coding, same-day surgery coding, ICD-10 experience, and AHIMA/AAPC credentials. A strong Windows/Excel/EMR background is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED
• Current coding credentials from AHIMA or AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC or CPC-H)
• 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience
• 2+ years of Same Day Surgery Coding
• 2+ years of ICD-10 experience
• Proficiency with Windows, MS Excel and EMR systems

Responsibilities

• Identify CPT and ICD-10 code assignments for outpatient Ambulatory Observation
• Apply coding knowledge to analyze CCI Edits and Medical Necessity Edits
• Understand Medicare APC codes
• Abstract additional data elements during chart review as needed
• Maintain ethical coding standards per AAPC/AHIMA
• Meet performance standards for quality and productivity
• Provide documentation feedback to providers and query physicians when needed
• Stay updated with QM and Coding/Quality Management guidance
• Participate in department meetings and educational events
• Review coded/chart records and manage missing items
• Additional duties as assigned by manager
