Job summary

SWCA Environmental Consultants seeks a Principal Archaeologist to lead the Cultural Resources Program in the Rocky Mountain/Plains sub-region from Sheridan, WY. The role oversees clients, projects, and staff, ensuring technical rigor and Section 106 compliance while supporting growth and cross-office collaboration.

The position requires a Master’s in a related field, 10+ years’ experience, and eligibility to be listed as a Principal Investigator on federal permits in WY/MT.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field.
• 10+ years of progressively responsible cultural resources fieldwork, consulting, and project management.
• Experience in Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, or Colorado.
• Registered Professional Archaeologist (or eligible for RPA).
• Ability to be listed as PI on federal permits in WY and MT.
• Experience with federal, state, and local environmental laws incl. NHPA/NEPA/NAGPRA/ARPA.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic project leadership and oversee technical approaches, QA/QC.
• Mentor staff and develop program capabilities; drive cross-office collaboration.
• Lead business development and client relations to capture new work.
• Prepare and review cultural resources reports and mitigation recommendations.
• Direct field and laboratory teams in coordination with project managers.
