Qualifications

• Eligibility for coding certification after training and appropriate accreditation.
• Ability to use health information software and electronic health records.

Responsibilities

• Assign codes to outpatient services and admissions.
• Abstract required medical, surgical, demographic and administrative data.
• Code using current ICD-CM, CPT and HCPCS guidelines.
• Review health records to ensure complete and accurate documentation for coding.
• Utilize EHR systems (VistA/CPRS) and encoder tools to transmit data to national VA database.
• Maintain knowledge of regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information.
