Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology anatomy and physiology.
• Experience or education in health information management and coding.
• Ability to apply ICD-CM and PCS conventions and guidelines.
• Understanding of privacy HIPAA and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to navigate health records and abstract information for coding.

Responsibilities

• Review health records to abstract medical, surgical, and demographic data.
• Assign codes from ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS based on documentation.
• Ensure coding accuracy to support DRG assignment and billing.
• Query clinicians when documentation is insufficient or unclear.
• Maintain knowledge of coding guidelines and regulatory changes.
• Use health IT systems and software to input and transmit coded data.
• Support quality audits and correct any identified data errors.
• Stay within established timelines and communicate issues to supervisor.
