Job summary

The Veterans Health Administration (DOVA) seeks a disciplined Medical Records Technician (Coder-Outpatient) to perform full outpatient coding within the Health Information Management section. The role requires expertise in ICD, CPT, HCPCS coding, and medical terminology to ensure accurate data capture and billing.

Remote-friendly with a 8:00am–4:30pm EST schedule, GS-8 level, and competitive compensation. Applicants must meet federal qualification standards and maintain credentials in AHIMA/AAPC

Qualifications

• One year of creditable experience indicating knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health records.
• Associate degree or AHIMA/AAPC training with coursework in medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, coding, and health records.
• Certification requirements include AHIMA or AAPC credentials and ongoing maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Assigns codes to outpatient and/or inpatient professional services using ICD, CPT, and HCPCS.
• Selects and assigns codes considering guidelines and VERa program classifications.
• Reviews health records to ensure complete data capture and appropriate documentation.
• Codes outpatient encounters and inpatient professional services; links diagnoses to procedures and determines E/M levels.
• Ensures accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards; mentors staff on coding practices.
