Qualifications

• Three years previous coding experience required.
• AHIMA or AAPC coding certification required.
• Associate degree in health information technology preferred or coding certificate program.
• Bachelor's degree acceptable as alternative.

Responsibilities

• Codes the correct principal/primary diagnosis with 95%+ accuracy.
• Identifies all significant diagnoses (HCCs) and assigns codes.
• Codes procedures and verifies principal procedure per guidelines.
• Ensures codes reflect clinical severity and documentation.
• Follows official coding guidelines and payer policies.
• Validates medical necessity based on guidelines and policies.
• Researches and resolves claim edits/denials as needed.
• Collaborates with providers to improve documentation quality.
• Applies charge data and verifies level of service is supported.
• Maintains production standards and accurate abstract data.
• Supports student internship coding training.
• Codes for assigned areas within hospital or specialty.
• Coordinates special projects/teams.
