Job summary

Southern New Hampshire University is seeking a Data Security Engineer to safeguard institutional data across the enterprise data estate, including analytics platforms like Microsoft Fabric and Databricks, and relational databases such as Azure SQL and SQL Server.

The role is 100% remote from approved US states, reporting to the Deputy CISO, and involves hands-on security control implementation, encryption, access management, and automated compliance workflows with collaboration across IT teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in information technology, computer science, or related field.
• 7+ years in information security, cloud engineering, database engineering, data engineering, or related field.
• 2+ years focused on data protection or database security.
• Proficiency with SQL and the ability to assess queries, permissions, schemas, and security configurations.
• Strong scripting/automation skills using platform APIs or IaC.

Responsibilities

• Implement data protection controls across the enterprise data estate.
• Configure and operate encryption controls for data at rest and in transit.
• Enforce least-privilege access models and conduct entitlement reviews.
• Harden security configurations for Microsoft Fabric, Databricks, Azure SQL, SQL Server.
• Embed security controls into data ingestion, transformation, and pipelines.
• Protect non-production environments through masking and synthetic data.
• Automate control deployment, configuration assessment, and compliance validation.
• Document guides, runbooks, and participate in threat modeling.
