Job summary

The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD is seeking a dedicated Crisis Line Counselor in Houston to provide immediate crisis intervention, empathetic listening, and resource referrals. The role supports the 988 Lifeline hub and regional crisis services 24/7/365, requiring strong multitasking and rapid assessment skills.

Ideal candidates have a bachelor’s degree and customer service experience, with 200+ hours of crisis-related training.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Customer service experience preferred, especially by phone.
• Successful completion of 200+ training hours covering crisis intervention and related topics.

Responsibilities

• Be ready and available to take calls during an assigned shift.
• Build connection and empathy with callers.
• Apply active listening and crisis intervention techniques.
• Assess calls using the Crisis Line Comprehensive Framework.
• Collaborate with the caller to brainstorm options and next steps.
• Provide resources/referrals and document interactions during and after calls.
• Make timely referrals as needed.
