Job summary

UnitedHealth Group, through Optum, is seeking a Coding Supervisor to lead inpatient, outpatient, or professional coding teams. You will mentor staff, manage schedules, and ensure adherence to ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and payer guidelines across the coding function.

In this remote role, you will oversee daily queues, audits, and quality metrics while collaborating with HIM, billing, and clinical departments to resolve issues and drive revenue integrity.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED.
• Professional CPC coder certification with credentialing from AHIMA and/or AAPC to be maintained annually.
• 3+ years of medical coding experience in pro-fee coding.
• 1+ years in supervisory or lead experience with ability to lead, coach, mentor and evaluate staff.

Responsibilities

• Supervise day-to-day operations of the coding team (inpatient, outpatient, professional, or specialty coders).
• Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluations for coding staff.
• Monitor productivity and quality metrics, ensuring teams meet benchmarks.
• Develop and maintain staff schedules, manage PTO, and ensure coverage.
• Lead meetings and training sessions to communicate updates and expectations.
• Ensure coding accuracy and adherence to ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and payer guidelines.
• Conduct audits; provide feedback and corrective action plans.
• Stay current with CMS, OIG, NCCI edits and payer bulletins.
• Ensure compliance with policies and ethical standards.
• Oversee daily work queue, assignment of cases, and timely resolution of holds/deficiencies.
• Identify barriers and streamline workflows to reduce delays and improve revenue cycle.
• Collaborate with HIM, billing, and clinical departments to resolve issues.
• Escalate system or operational concerns and help develop corrective plans.
• Provide ongoing education to coders on guideline changes and payer rules.
• Collaborate with physicians to improve documentation quality.
• Develop training materials for new hires and onboarding.
• Monitor coding dashboards, WQs, and productivity reports.
• Participate in EHR/encoder updates and testing.
• Maintain documentation of policies, procedures, and workflows.
• Partner with billing, editing, and denials teams to resolve claims.
• Analyze trends in denials and implement corrective actions.
• Support charge capture accuracy and reimbursements.
• Serve as operational contact for coding questions and communicate updates to stakeholders.
