Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care’s Professional Coding Division seeks a Coding Representative to assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes for professional services, outpatient encounters, and inpatient stays.

This role offers remote work eligibility with onsite or hybrid training at the HSSB building. Training will be conducted onsite or via hybrid (Inhouse/Teams) as determined by supervision.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and/or experience.
• Knowledge of professional/physician coding rules.
• Experience with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, NCCI, NCD, LCD, and outpatient coding guidelines.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with strong time management.
• Ability to work independently in remote/hybrid settings.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records to assign CPT/HCPCS and/or ICD-10-CM diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Monitor compliance/coding standards to ensure full and accurate reimbursement.
• Communicate with physicians and staff for information needed for accurate code assignment.
• Meet departmental targets regarding volume and accuracy of codes.
• Adopt and incorporate initiatives to improve compliance and reduce risk.
• Analyze reports related to documentation issues, coding patterns, reimbursement trends.
• Participate in internal coding and development training as needed.
