Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to lead the modernization of a healthcare data platform. This remote role focuses on evolving a MSSQL XML object store toward a scalable AWS data architecture, enabling high-performance, SQL-based reporting for stakeholders.

You will evaluate AWS data strategies, design storage options like S3 + Athena or Redshift, and build the reporting layer for non-technical users.

Qualifications

8+ years of software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
Experience architecting cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
Proven ability to select AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
Experience delivering analytics for non-technical users.
Hands-on AWS data services experience: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
Strong SQL skills to design relational layers over XML/JSON data.
Experience with XML-heavy data stores and transformation at scale.
Ability to evaluate trade-offs across AWS services by cost and performance.
Familiarity with AWS analytics/BI tooling (Athena, QuickSight, RedShift).
Proficiency with Git/GitHub and CI/CD tooling; IaC with CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
Strong communication of architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience translating business reporting needs into technical data models.

Responsibilities

Lead modernizing the healthcare data platform.
Evolve MSSQL XML object store toward cloud-native AWS architecture with SQL-based reporting.
Evaluate AWS data strategies and storage options based on patterns and cost.
Design reporting layers for non-technical users to run SQL queries.
Architect migration of XML object store data to AWS platform with optimal formats.
Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into data models.
Coordinate data flows from EDI pipelines into the new layer with backend engineers.
Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS-native tooling.
Apply IaC with CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform; document architecture decisions.
