Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Referral Specialist to coordinate patient flow, schedule referrals to specialists, obtain insurance authorization, and communicate appointment details with patients and PCPs. Responsibilities include triaging referrals, tracking follow-ups, and ensuring accurate documentation, with a focus on patient-centered care and adherence to practice

Qualifications

• Two years of clinical referral experience required.
• Experience with PCMH referral processes preferred.
• Strong data entry and computer skills are required.
• Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to manage competing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Schedule/coordinate/triage referrals via Lifechart work queues.
• Set follow-up alarms and track outstanding referrals.
• Obtain un-resulted consults and testing orders and forward to providers.
• Alert ordering providers when patients miss appointments.
• Scan and label correspondence in the medical record; forward to correct provider.
• Take messages, create referrals, and obtain PCP approval before sending to specialists.
• Advise patients with appointment instructions and reminders.
• Maintain knowledge of insurer referral authorization requirements and cultural sensitivity.
• Participate in performance and quality improvement activities.
• Attend required meetings and trainings and perform related duties as assigned.
