Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Referral Specialist to coordinate patient referrals and scheduling with physicians and testing facilities. You will obtain necessary insurance authorizations, communicate appointment details to patients, and ensure proper forwarding of information to specialist offices in line with practice protocols.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; billing and medical knowledge.
• Minimum two years of clinical referral experience.
• PCMH referral experience preferred.
• Data entry skills and computer experience required.
• Strong customer service focus.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Organized and able to manage competing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Schedule/coordinate/triage all referrals created by and sent to the practice via LifeChart work queues.
• Obtain all un-resulted consults and testing orders managed by the referral office.
• Alert ordering provider of missed appointments with specialists or testing facilities.
• Scan correspondence into medical records and forward to appropriate provider.
• Take messages from the referral line/fax, create referrals in LifeChart, and seek PCP approval prior to sending to specialists.
• Contact patients with appointment information and any pre-appointment instructions.
• Maintain knowledge of insurer referral authorization requirements and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
• Serve as a resource to practice team on referral issues.
• Participate in practice performance and quality improvement activities.
