Equipment Operator Salary Ranges

• Equipment Operator I: $42,769 - $76,983
• Equipment Operator II: $46,035 - $82,862
• Equipment Operator III: $48,105 - $86,590

Position Overview

As an Equipment Operator I in Solid Waste, you will:

• Operate a semi-automated rear-loading solid waste collection truck to collect household trash, recycling, yard waste, and other waste.

Minimum Requirements for Equipment Operator I:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Some experience operating refuse collection vehicles or similar equipment.
• Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or obtain one within 180 days.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Position is safety sensitive; subject to alcohol and drug testing as per DOT and city policies.
• Must pass a background check prior to employment or promotion.

Position Overview for Equipment Operator II:

As an Equipment Operator II in Solid Waste, you will:

• Maintain and operate automated/knuckle boom trucks, perform routine maintenance, and ensure safe operation.

Minimum Requirements for Equipment Operator II:

• High school diploma or GED.
• One year of full-time experience in a related solid waste position.
• Must possess a Virginia CDL Class B.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory record.
• Position is safety sensitive; subject to testing.
• Must pass a background check.

Position Overview for Equipment Operator III:

As an Equipment Operator III in Solid Waste, you will:

• Plan, coordinate, and perform daily waste collections using various trucks and equipment.

Minimum Requirements for Equipment Operator III:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Three years of full-time experience in solid waste or related field.
• Virginia CDL Class A.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory record.
• Position is safety sensitive; subject to testing.
• Must pass a background check.

• May be considered essential personnel during emergencies, requiring long hours and unusual schedules.
