The Position

This position involves manual work functions related to operating environmental equipment in the Bureau of Solid Waste Services. Responsibilities include operating rear loader garbage trucks and open-body dump trucks, emptying disposal containers, performing vehicle maintenance, and maintaining records.

Examples Of Essential Duties

• Operate environmental equipment such as rear loader garbage trucks and open-body dump trucks to remove refuse from residential units and special events.
• Use tools like pitchforks, rakes, shovels, and brooms to empty receptacles and collect yard trimming, bulk rubbish, and spillage.
• Perform vehicle inspections and basic maintenance; keep equipment clean.
• Obtain necessary tools to perform tasks efficiently and timely.
• Communicate progress and issues to supervisors.
• Report mechanical problems and emergency situations.
• Respond to routine information requests from officials, employees, the public, or other city agencies.
• Use a two-way radio for communication and instructions.
• Maintain high accuracy and quality in duties.
• Operate various trucks including tandem dump trucks, MAD VAC, and mini-trucks as needed.
• Perform maintenance to prevent equipment damage.
• Fuel and dump vehicles at the end of shifts.

Record Keeping and Documentation

• Handle forms, work orders, reports, and documentation.
• Complete vehicle maintenance reports and logs related to equipment and bulk items.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required. One year of experience operating medium-sized trucks or equipment such as garbage trucks is required, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Class B endorsement.

Supplemental Information

Effective communication skills, judgment, ability to understand regulations, work under stress, follow instructions, perform strenuous work, operate large trucks safely, and pass a performance test are essential. Supervisory ability is also required.
